Chandeliers

The Lighting Superstore stocks a wide range of chandeliers.

A chandelier is a decorative, sometimes ornate, light fixture suspended from a ceiling, usually having branched supports for a number of lights.

CHANDELIER FOR YOUR DINING ROOMS

Chandeliers and dining rooms are a perfect match. The dining room requires an intimate feel and different forms of lighting is a fantastic way to achieve this.

The average dining room chandelier will generally be a 4-6 light chandelier, a great rule of thumb for your size is that you should be looking for a 65-80cm diameter fixture.

Your dining room chandelier should be low enough to create a warm, intimate atmosphere, but not so low that it will get in the way. You’ll also want to make sure you’re measuring things correctly so no one ends up hurting themselves on it. It should not be wider than your table.

To calculate your ideal chandelier diameter or width you’ll need, to follow these simple guidelines:

Round tables:  select a chandelier that is 1/3 the width of your table. A 1.5m table would take a 50cm light fixture above it. You will be able to go slightly bigger for ovular and rectangular tables.

Rectangular tables measure the width of your dining table, divide it by 2, and then add 15cm. No matter what, hang it with the bottom 30 to 34 inches above the table.

This is applicable either way, as if you have a chandelier that you absolutely love, you can use this to find the ideal size of a table that you should be using to create that warm, intimate atmosphere.

CHANDLIERS FOR THE BEDROOM

A lot of people wonder Can I put a chandelier in their bedroom? The answer is YES. Hanging a chandelier in your bedroom creates a stylish, inviting atmosphere. It can also add a fun and modern style to the room depending on the type of fixture you decide on.

You have a few options when it comes down to where to hang your chandelier. You have a couple of great options, center it in the room or center it over the bed. Something that people don't often think of, you can also hang pendants above your bedside tables, instead of placing table lamps in their place.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have a few lighting options to create balance in your room.

HANGING CHANDELIERS IN YOUR ENTRYWAYS

For the most part, there are two different entryways: grand entryways (generally double-height) or an entrance with a normal ceiling height (generally around 2.4m high).

For spaces with very tall ceilings, make sure you are hanging your chandelier around 2.4m above the floor. Add an additional 0.3m if the room is taller than 3.6m. You can also hang lights at different heights to fill the space while also having them hang low enough to help make the space right at the entrance feel more intimate. This can generally be done by pulling the cables through the canopy that the chandelier would be hanging from on the roof.

Keep in mind a chandelier in your entryway will have to be far enough away and high enough off the floor that your door will not swing into it. Centering a light in the entry can be beautiful, but you may want to choose a petite pendant or a flush-mount fixture instead of a true chandelier if collisions could be an issue.

CHANDELIERS FOR LARGE ROOMS

Two or three are sometimes better than one! This is especially true if you have a very large space to work with. For example, hang a series of pendants over a large kitchen island or use two smaller chandeliers over your table instead of one large one.

For a modern look with your chandelier, the best option is to use it to create a focal point for the room.
