You may ask yourself how do you know if you’re choosing the best oyster light for your room? Here’s a bit of expert advice from The Lighting Superstore on how to select the perfect oyster light.

Oyster Ceiling Light

Oyster lights are both energy-saving and cost-efficient, and can be placed in any room in your home. Oyster lights are termed as such because these are directly attached or mounted to the ceiling. These are a great choice when it comes to providing lighting in your home, especially if you have low ceilings. Oyster lights have evolved past the stage of being your stock standard circular light fitting. The Zola, The Traverse and The Sorel below are great example of stylish, modern close to ceiling fittings.

4 Tips for Choosing Oyster Lights

  • LED – We always recommend choosing LED oyster lights – LEDs are extremely energy efficient and much longer lasting when compared with halogen globes.
  • Lumens – The lumens are the metric that will measure the brightness of your light and therefore the brightness of your room. For LED oyster lights in a standard size room, we recommend a minimum 2500 lumens closer to 3000 (30 – 40w). If you have a standard sized bedroom (3 x 3m) you could even look to use an oyster light with around 1500 lumens (15 – 20w).
  • Dimmable – There is a lot of choice when it comes to using quality dimmers so you can easily achieve a slimline look. The Lighting Outlet always recommends selecting a dimmable oyster light so that you are able to select the absolute perfect amount of illumination for your rooms. Using a quality dimmer that works on nearly every LED oyster ceiling light – like our Universal Dimmer.

  • Colour Temperature – Most oysters nowadays will be a tri colour. This means that you will be able to select which colour temperature to run your fitting at. Generally the cool white (4-5000k) or day light (6000k+) are used as they will help to avoid dark shadows and ensure the oyster lights up a room sufficiently. If you are looking for a warmer glow, which will provide a more natural light you can opt to try the warm white (3000k) setting.
